Slow motion foosball - BBQ Sunday 2pm.    I still have spots open....I want to limit attendence to under a dozen.  I'm currently now-where near that.   Ping me here or at foosninja@hotmail.com will take the first dozen to respond.

If you missed it I gave details a few pages back.  Basically I've got a high speed video camera and we're going to film foosball shots in slow-mo and BBQ....and maybe play some foos after that.
Foosinfool - Jul 3 2009 12:50PM
Ya Slowshooter, I like those new tables. I for one will support Ron.
Two new tables will be pretty awesome. I've got to play on Jeffs and the level of
play from everyone is two fold. See ya Thursday.

Benny, I miss the Dungeon!

Yo Pat,
           Can't say I blame you.

LOL Dave,

You have permission to read my post using the word debating in the place of bickering.
You will end up with the same result.

Keep up the good sense of humor.

Dave D - Jul 3 2009 12:04PM
Oh, come on, Ben!

Posting alternating views is not bickering.  It is debating.
Old Man Foos - Jul 3 2009 11:56AM
As Kathy and I haven't been playing or promoting foos anymore.  I have 3 cherrywood style coin-op tornado foos
tables standing up in my garage just gathering dust and will take $700 each for them. This still leaves me 2 in the
"real" dungeon.  lol. if we decide to open it up anymore.

As far as all this bickering, you can see why after 20+
years of promoting why we gave it up. Everyone has ideas, some good and some very lame, but it's ultimately up
to the person whos promoting or putting the tables in the location. Example: I agree both views of a pro-am. While
benefiting the weaker players and getting them more into it and playing the tourneys more. You also penalize the
players that are good, but not as good as the better/best players taking away thier motivation for playing.
Everyone likes a fair shot at winning or at least not going out right away. I personaly perfer an open draw even if
it's handicaped, but that's just me because I fall into the above catorgorie more than not.
Point being promoting/running tourneys is a thankless job only for the love of foos.  Quit whinng and play or
shut up and don't or play somewhere else.

'Net,

Your posts are always well thought out, but I heartily disagree with the pro-am thing.

Pro-ams only give the lowest players a better chance of winning.  The mid ranked players get screwed (especially in Jack's idea).  I played in enough A-B draws to know--many of those being the lowest rated "A" player (really I was a mediocre [at best] B who would be moved up because I wouldn't complain).  Never again.
Pat - Jul 3 2009 10:55AM
Harold; I’ve only been logging the main event that you have been submitting, I mean no disrespect to the boys but I intended my stats pages to reflect who is coming out on top of the locals. If the same 8 players log in multiple events in the same night my charts become meaningless.

I hope you understand my reasoning.
Pat

My thought on pro-am's;
Not everyone likes them, Good for the Pro's and the Am's.
Not so good for the Semi
Foosinfool - Jul 3 2009 10:46AM
Portland Foosball / Net, I agree. I think a change of scenery would be good.  Something new is always exciting.
No, I'm not going to move to Puallup. ( Although I've thought about it. Great Foosball up there) A good solid TD would help
big time also. No offense the the guys who have stepped up to run toureys. Its a thankless job and some people make it tough on them.
Hopefully, As the beautiful weather goes down, the attendance will go up. I'm not sure which is better.
As my old friend Tom Peterson would say.
(knock knock)WAKE UP! (knock knock) WAKE UP!

Sorry I got my dander up back there...

Regarding your post, Net: "My vote was always for more pro/ams... and Jack mentioned even if you don't have enough pros you can just put the higher rated players in a pool and draw their partners and then the rest. "
That is pretty much what we do every week at Little Italys, but turned upside down: the lowest rated players always draw into a smaller pool of highest rated players; after its assured they have at least a chance to win, the other teams are chosen.  On some occasions, I allow the lower ranked players to choose their partner...interestingly enough, they sometimes choose one another.  In those cases, I give them points to help them (its been as many as 3pts in games to 5).  I think everyone will agree that the games are always highly competitive, and nobody is a sure winner (although it seems that Joe wins far too often...I'm thinking of bountying him...;').

Oh, don't forget to come on out next weekend for the State Games of Oregon Table Soccer event.  Pre-register if you can (it'll save you $5).

AKD last week you boasted that you let your game do the talking when I took you and Foz to overtime.
What was it saying this week?

Sorry I just can't let an opportunity like this go.
Net - Jul 3 2009 12:47AM
If it doesn't promote foos now, today, its not worth talking about... who said who did what? - what?... in my experience the TD's always did a stand-up job in PDX and I think even if anything like that ever happened that it wasn't what got tourney attendance low in pdx.  More likely its because its summer, there have been competing private tourneys, entry fees and kick-ins, and the start time is a great point AKD... also an issue here in Spokane - its such a catch-22 when you have less people start showing up and you wait as long as you can to get a decent-sized tourney but then before you know it, its continually starting way too late, folks start coming later and later, and then not at all - because it starts too late!  Sometimes its just a matter of the best day no longer being the best day... and you can never find a best day and place for everyone.  As for late start times, absolutely, you just have to set a time and enforce it... and "they will come" - on time... although a few folks may get a bit upset in the process, as long as everyone is treated equally they will get over it.  But really I thought they were doing a pretty good job with start times in pdx although not to the nazi degree.  Of course I haven't been in the scene lately, and it would be hypocritical for me to talk about being late :-)

So its been well documented that there are 2 players in pdx that don't have a ride... they may do better to work on organizing a car pool like AKD and Wrap-daddy Pat have, than to try and get all the other players to go to another location near the max - but, by all means take that ball and run with it, but please, keep the mud on the ground.

It would be awesome to have another location in pdx - esp an all-ages that isn't way out of town, although it seems like the majority of under-agers are out of town - hmmm, funny how that works - good job Hutch promoting, getting, and keeping the younger folks involved and moving up out there.   However, it is absolutely correct that the HT venue has been a problem - and that has also fallen into a catch 22...  when they treat you like crap and don't pitch in for the tourney, there's no incentive to spend any money there - not long before I moved I made a conscious effort not to spend $ there after having been treated crappy and seeing how they were treating others and the scene in general.   The most obvious difference in the location comparison was that all the Seattle locations kick in to the pot, but not HT - instead having a $10 entry.  Maybe a lower entry and just less payout would bring more players back?

My vote was always for more pro/ams... and Jack mentioned even if you don't have enough pros you can just put the higher rated players in a pool and draw their partners and then the rest.  He also suggested having pro/am brings with the stipulation that you can't play with the same partner two weeks in a row - in order to promote more opportunity for the ams to play with different pros.  Hopefully the pros would show to support.

Just my two cents from timbuktwo... have a great 4th everyone!  Very cool Floppy, wish I could make it!

(Dennis... its probably because you don't have to smell the smoke anymore that you need to dole out the deodorant!)

Geez, Randy...what are you trying to do?
"...but, that wasn't good enough for our FD (Foos Director). I had a spot DOWNTOWN PORTLAND
(called BackSpace), right off the MAX.  I had already spoken with the owner of BackSpace and we were IN...however, the FD had issues with the music and too big of a crowd..."
Regarding my (the "FD") involvement, you are absolutely misrepresenting my input.  Nothing isn't "good enough" from my perspective.  I *have* never (and *would* never) try to squash ANY location that wants to host foosball.  Also, although I don't recall much in our talks about Players, I do have a clear recollection about BackSpace.  I went down to talk to the owner, but he wasn't in (it was a Saturday morning, and there was NO music playing...I had a pastrie and cup of coffee with my then-22-year-old daughter...more her style of place than mine, but it was okay).  I had a couple of email exchanges with him, and it was left with me waiting for his response...which he never did.  In my end of the email conversations, I actually promoted YOU as the house-pro, so I don't know what my "issues" were that would have interfered with getting foos in there.  And, at the time, I didn't own any tables, so I was only trying to scope it out as the newly appointed Grand Poobah.  I was keen on finding a place for the then pipe-dream 2008 Oregon State Championships.  The BackSpace owner, while initially receptive, apparently didn't care to pursue.  I got wrapped up in acquiring Ron Sleeter's Little Italys tables, and lost interest in bird-dogging the BackSpace.  I would be *thrilled* if somebody put some tables into the BackSpace...

Flop,
If I go, you'll be counting sheep in your beddy-bye @ 10PM.

;-)
Floppy - Jul 2 2009 4:12PM
Kevin, 2pm Sunday....you RSVPing?

Toby's and Danny's are on week nights a long way from my bed...this means if I go, I don't get to bed until the 2 am ball park, which is only 4.5 hours from when my alarm clock goes of to start my new day.    I make a rare appearance at Danny's, Toby's though, last time I went I wasn't in bed until 3am.

Kevin - Jul 2 2009 3:56PM
Flop,
Congrats on your win last night. Sunday sounds good BTW... what time? Are you able to e-mail or post videos to YouTube?
Bring that non-life of yours up to Danny's or Toby's once in a while (Like tonight for example??)

Greg - Summertime is notoriously "Down" a little on numbers.  People wind up vacationing, and doing "Summer stuff", and foosball number normally fall off about 25%.   Winter is usually the Foosball turnout strong season....soon as the weather turns bad, the numbers will pick back up.   I'm actually surprised we've been having as good of turnouts as we have been having....that string of 10+ teams in a row was impressive.

I got no life, so I'll be there Wednesdays....
slowshooter - Jul 2 2009 2:59PM
I am not talking about changing the format or place, my response was to the accusations of how the draw was conducted.
Randy - Jul 2 2009 1:44PM
Slowshooter,
I tried to shoot out some ideas, but nobody wanted to hear what I have to say...NOBODY.

I mentioned a PYP (Pick Your Partner), I've mentioned Player's - an all ages place - but, that
wasn't good enough for our FD (Foos Director). I had a spot DOWNTOWN PORTLAND
(called BackSpace), right off the MAX.  I had already spoken with the owner of BackSpace
and we were IN...however, the FD had issues with the music and too big of a crowd (and it was
another all-ages place.)  We need an all-ages place, in a really good location, to get the ball
rolling again.

I also called DUKE'S, and we were in there, too...but that was a no go, also.

SO....what else do you want from me?  I did what I could.
Scott - Jul 2 2009 1:25PM

Who won at the Summit last night? I left when the final started between Chuck/Bruce and Floppy/Ron. Tim T. and Bill S. got 3rd.

And where is everyone? I think 7 teams last night maybe it's summertime or did everybody retire?
Chuck - Jul 2 2009 12:51PM
Floppy and Ron won last night. Good job guys.

Ron, what's your last name? You've been coming in pretty steadily for a few months, so we should know for when we post results.

Thanks to Matt Cox, yes Matt Cox,  for running the tournament last night!!!
