FOOS-B-Q Clarification - Jul 29 2010 12:11PM
Okay so obviously I changed my mind - mid post, in my last post about the foos-B.Q. format.

So here it is simplified:

* If you plan on attending please RSVP (here on NWFOOS) with what dish you're bringing to avoid everyone bringing the same thing.
* Show up any time from Noon-10pm ..... well I'm kicking everyone out at 10pm so maybe showing up close to 10 will have less value.
* $15 buy in.  When you show up you buy $15 in poker chips.
* If you are a fooser I'll give you a poker chip with your name on it, to put in the foosball match draw bag.
* When a table is free, 4 chips will be drawn from the draw bag to represent the next match up.
* Matches are two out of three games to 5 points (win by two last game to 8).  Each player antes up half his player rating in chips.  So if you're a 5 you ante $2.50   if you're an 8 you ante $4.   Winning team splits losing team's ante, then they put their named poker chip back in the foosball bag so they can be pulled for future matches.
* The poker table will be Dealer's choice format so players can come and go as they are called for foosball matches. 1 bit ante.  That's right, I'm old.  the lowest denomination of chips will be 1 bit chips.  I'm thinkin prolly a 50cent limit on poker bets to keep it friendly.(ish)
* Buy in or Cash out any time you please.  Or take your named chip out of the foosball bag, if you want a break from foos.
*Pirate Metal music available on request....I can probably also come up with Eminem and the Doors.  (no country music, rap or Brittney Spears....in fact if you request Britney Spears we will all laugh at you an make you stand outside.)

It's all just that easy.....

Floppy you have way to much time on your hands dude. Sounds like fun but Julie and I will be out of town. Hope it goes well.
Floppy on FOOS-B-Q - Jul 29 2010 11:44AM
- A week from Saturday -

Three words:
Foosball, Poker, & BBQ

So I'm considering a Foosball, Poker, & BBQ EXTRAVAGANZA at my place a week from Saturday.

Still in the early planning stages - but here are my initial thoughts - Rather than having a double elimination tournament, I'm considering more of an "open format" Foos & Poker thing.   I've got a big nice poker table, a Tornado and Warrior foosball tables.   Normally when you play in a foosball tournament you pay $10 (or whatever amount), draw a random partner you're stuck with all night and play until you've lost twice.  And if you've won enough games before you get your second loss you get paid.

I'm tossing NORMALITY in the crapper for this event!

This event has a $15 buy in.   When you buy in you get $15 in poker chips, and one poker chip with your name on it gets dropped in the foosball bag.   When a table is free, four chips are drawn from the foosball bag representing the 4 people who will play that 2 out of three match on that table.  Each player antes up a $5 chip, the winning team gets the losing team's chips.   While you're not involved in a foosball match, either fill your hand with a plate of food from the pot-luck style buffet of goodness, or take your chips and sit down at the dealer's choice poker table.

Advantages:
*Minimum 3 match losses before you're eliminated.
*Play poker when you're between matches.
*Come and go as you please - If you want to leave or take a break - remove your chip from the poker bag and cash out.
*Noon - 10pm   -  Loose organization of event allows players to come and go as they please.  Buy in or Cash out any time.
*If your significant other doesn't play foosball but loves poker, (like Dave), you can buy chips and not put your chip in the foosball bag and just enjoy poker.

Please RSVP by posting here with what dish you're tentatively bringing, so that we don't wind up with 10 players showing up with Safeway Potato salad.   I've got a grill if you want to bring something like Hamburgers or Dogs and cook them on site.

My poker table could seat 6-8 players.  Plus 8 players on the foosball tables, plus 2-4 players milling about....so I can easily keep 20 players simultaniously entertained, and with the ability for players to come and go, as their schedule allows, I should be able to handle more if they're not all here at the same time.   Additionally I've got a big TV and plenty of movies I can toss on for entertainment, though foosball sounds may disrupt quality movie viewing.

I'm considering ODDs for the foosball matchup.  For example if a pro team gets pulled to play a rookie team, the Rookie team ante's less than the pro team....oh....hey I've got it!!!   Each player Ante's half their Rating in chips.   So like myself - I'm rated a 9 so I ante $4.50 when I play Foos.  a Player rated a 6 would Ante $3, and so on.   Winning team splits losing team's ante.  Yeah, I like that better!

Myk,
Sounds like players had a good time. Congrats on a successful tournament.

Funny, a post from akd AT 4.11AM. Jesus go to bed!

This NW cup thing is ridiculous, Im with Flop on that you have all these players together in one venue & should have
another real non exclusive event. What about a triple elimination DYP

Floppy on stuff - Jul 29 2010 12:44AM
Hey, I don't want to be misconstrued as "Complaining" that Jeanette played as a "Washington" player.   I'm actually more of the mindset of what Dave posted:   I didn't really see a need for a separate "qualifier" event.   Just whomever wins the OD is the WSO tournament champion.  (no matter where they're from)

I don't like "Exclusive" events....in my opinion, I think it was silly to have a bunch of out of town foosball players in the room, and play an event they're not allowed to play in.    Seems like a missed opportunity to have an event in it's place which could have included those people that we rarely get to play with.

But I also don't want to come off as Mr. Complain E. Pants, the tournament actually went pretty well and smooth, and the venue was nice and comfortable.

ON ANOTHER NOTE...

What a great tournament this weekend!  Thank you Moya for your sweet words, it was awesome playing with you!  What a nailbiter that final match was, and you played great.  Mo and Ro are tough!  And Michele, great job in WS.

But thanks to all my partners, it was fun to get to play with so many different talented players... Moya and Jack of course, Jeff P., Casey, and Blake - what a great run we had in the DYP!  You played really well and we finished right up there with some good teams - I think 5/6th or 7/8th!  Pretty respectable for a couple of amateurs in a 34 team event.  Wow, 34 teams!

There was a great turnout, and it was run smoothly thanks to Myk, Pat, Craig and Dave, thank you so much for all your work!  Oh, and can't forget the guys who put up, tore down, and hauled around the tables ...thanks Foz and crew!  The venue was great, it worked out good for my pups, as well as the other kids :-)  lol... talk about some young talent!  It was great having the guys from Edmonton down too, I'm sure they won't be amateurs for long! awesome playing.  But I have to also mention Robbie Cook - only 15 and took second in AS.. .good job Robbie.  I liked the Fireball overall, but struggled a bit with the setup in the back, pretty similar to Warrior in some respects.  I love the interchangable and easily-changed-out rod design.  I think if Jack had started shooting the front pin earlier we may have done better in OD.

And for those who missed the final two matches (being most everyone)... you missed some great entertainment!  I think Foz was tempted to kill Floppy when he called himself for a reset in the final game of the match with Kathy and Justin, there was some great humor in there and I think I might have some of it on video, but karma came through for Floppy in the end.  Lots of fun and laughs in the final match as well - I'd love to see that video Myk.

Thanks again Myk!  I can't wait for the next one.
Net - Jul 28 2010 11:43PM
Pat - there was only one person other than AKD that could have posted that... I don't know his name but he was breaking down the tables... a big guy with curly hair... I never saw him play.  The poster did not mention that in one of the games before that George got blasted by a 5 bar from Kathy... I think you were the one that said, "that's irony"!

OM... there was a Lenty vs Vick match - it happened in Vegas... Jack and I put David Vick and his partner in the losers bracket of the Pro/Am and then beat them again to play in the finals, we won the first match against Hagerman (who had put us in the losers) but weren't able to pull off the DD.  I partnered with David V. in the Pro/Am at the Nationals in St. Louis earlier this month.  I think we finished 7/8 or something... not sure, it was 3:30am when we were put out by the team that won it.. or maybe they took 2nd?

I hate having to be an exception.  I also hated having placed 1st at the OSC and 4th at the WSO last year and yet not able to compete for the "NW cup" - especially when the teams that were able had to be drawn from as far down as 7/8th and 9/12th!  I understand that one reason is to promote the states to have their own tournaments and qualifiers to promote the sport.  However, I live 7 HOURS drive away from the only other foosers in Idaho and even if I could go down there to play they rarely have enough players to put on a local dyp let alone a state qualifier, and if they do put together a team to represent ID I doubt they want it to include a player who they don't play with regularly (although I did play with Mike V in Vegas).

I play in Spokane (a 15 min drive from my house in Post Falls - not Coeur d'Alene).  I support foosball in Spokane going to almost every event I possibly can, I tried to rally the players here by putting an email list together and sending out reminders for the tournaments, and I've played in league here.  I have attended almost every Seattle major event that I could, and I support the OR majors as well.  Myk made the decision that I am a WA player... with the caveat that I had to choose WA or ID, and could not play for both.  I chose WA.

Duke - there's a huge difference in our positions.. you have the opportunity to play in OR.  I do not have the opportunity to play in ID.  Boise is a 7 hour drive... Seattle is only 4 hours and Portland 5 1/2 - 6 hour drive from here.  It is definitely a special case.  Not allowing me to be considered a WA player takes away any possibility I have of being able to compete in a NW regional competition - I don't think that's fair either, especially when Jack and I have proven we are one of the top teams.  If it makes you feel any better there are times I live in Vancouver at Jacks house...

There are several questions here, and things to consider.. primarily, does it make sense here in the NW to use state residence as a decider for state representation?  There aren't too many active Vancouver players at the moment other than Jack (who plays both in Spokane and Portland), but they actually play in Portland when they compete at the local level.  For example Justin - he lives in Vancouver but he's a Portland player... there were also some grumblings about him playing in the WSO Qualifier, but he's lived in WA for awhile now, seems like a year, but that shouldn't matter since you don't have to live somewhere a year to get a DL.   Could/should we make the guidelines that you only have to live in the NW and can choose which state you represent if you are in a questionable situation?  I know Harold was concerned about the Tony Spredemans of the country coming in to claim the crown, but whats wrong with just making the qualification that you have to be a NW resident?  If a WA team wins the OSC and an OR team wins the WSO (both of which happened in 2009) whats wrong with having them both be included in a NW regional??  Is it about deciding who the top teams are in the region, or about whether WA beats OR?  This way ID, MT, and AK could be included if they chose to come to the OR or WA majors.  Or does a NW Regional have to be a small pool of current champions at all... could it just be its own tournament, open for all NW players to compete?

We have a regional representative - Myk - who is doing an awesome job in promoting foosball in the NW.  We can provide our input, but ultimately, its up to him to decide.

WISH I COULD'VE PLAYED - Jul 28 2010 10:33PM
Due to finances I was unable to compete in the open, but I did enjoy the whole weekend as a spectator all the way up to the end.  I was so very glad to be still around when tables were being torn down and very few competitors were left.  The finals of the senor doubles event was a very fierce battle where Kathy and Trinidad after being soundly beat for winner of winners came back to easily take two straight games to force a second match against A.K.D. and Rick Martin.  It looked like Rick would struggle after scoring 3 or 4 points and not be able to close the deal.  Then after pulling it off to gain a victory and going out to a nice lead the next game he started stumbling at 4 points and Kathy and Trinidad got back into the game coming back from 4-1 to 4-3.  Then with a switch the ball was served by A.K.D. at 7:12 P.M. and the shot heard around the foosball world was drilled as he executed the often imitated but never duplicated, as well as constantly disrespected, BS5000 to seal the deal.  I would've been pissed to have missed such an awesome match.  This totally made my weekend.
A.K.D. - Jul 28 2010 10:10PM
Yo Davc,
The winners of last years WSO open doubles were from Portland,  but the official WA state champs were the highest finishing WA team.  This has be done this way to have a team, or singles player to represent each particular state in regional competition.  But due to player base size it's necessary to have these tourneys as open events so enough competitors show up.  Good example:  Not long ago at Toby's was a special event with players from everywhere.  But at the WSO warmup there were only WA players, which actually turned out to be no different than our usual weekly draws.  I believe there were only 7 or 8 teams.
                                                                                                                            Your A.K.D.

OM - Jul 28 2010 5:25PM
I agree Pat. Each state and province, figure it out. But the bottom line is let's make it what it should be. The best against the best! WSO was the bomb! Can we make the Regionals even better? Also, can we do this in each catagory? Selfish ambitions here but my partner Dennis King and I won Am's dubs at the Oregon open, I'd love to face the other Am's from the NW. It means as much to us Am's as you pro's,,,
Pat - Jul 28 2010 4:42PM
After further thought Idaho should just send their own representatives to the Cup.
They are too spread out to have a playoff so they would settle that some other way.
OM - Jul 28 2010 4:10PM
Seems to me that we need written guidelines that can be accessed as easy as visiting this site and clicking on what ever it is that we want guiding us so we are all on the same page. We don't need grey areas as good people, like Janette, can get hurt by that.
There was such a good feel to the WSO and that is how it should be at any of our tournaments. I would suggest we take the high road on this and decide quickly and just as quickly lay out, in easy and straight forward terms, what our regional tournament's goals are about. On another note, what about our youth? I just love seeing those kids play like they do, really really cool!
Pat - Jul 28 2010 3:33PM
Let the whining begin!
It's about the Cup!
Can't have the same winners in both states can we?
The Judge's Absolute Verdict - Jul 28 2010 3:26PM
If you have a rule that says you must provide the particular state's driver's license to be eligible then you must either stand by it or drop
the requirement altogether. Making a exception for one person only is about the worse thing one can do.

Emotions seem to override intelligence sometimes.

Personally, I think the requirement is totally bogus, error prone  and should be dropped. The TD's need to take a close look at how other
regionals across the US exclude this as there is no legal basis they can stand on. Any court challenge to this would easily win as TD's are not
true officers of a corporation or voted in by the public.

All of those who were attendance are part of what I would call the Northwest Fooser community. Why have seggregation within this ?

Duke - Jul 28 2010 3:08PM
I play 90+% of my foos in the Seattle area and have been denied the opportunity to compete in WSO.  I say what's good for the goose is good for the gander.  It is either a rule or it is not.
WSO - Jul 28 2010 1:06PM

Pat - Jul 28 2010 12:53PM
Jeannette was the only exception, TD’s  decision.
She plays out of Spokane, I would have let her in too.
Dave D - Jul 28 2010 12:47PM
Why would a state open champion need to be from that state?

The same weekend the WSO went on, the canadan open golf tourney was happening.  Guess who was was crowned the champion--not a canadan.  They did, however have a trophy for the top canadan finisher.  Silly canadia.

Don't you think that if the whole state championship thing got going that it would be great for foos?  Imagine a group of people motivated to travel to other states so they could collect the titles.  You might actually encourage players to show up simply because they want to hold one or more titles.

If, on the other hand, you want to have a tourney to figure out who is the best player who lives in a particular place, that seems like just trying to limit the size of the pond so you can brag about what a big fish you are.

dld--North Seattle Oaktree Regional Champion (within 16 blocks of the oaktree shopping center, I think Greengo is ~20blocks away).  Five years running.
WSO - Jul 28 2010 12:30PM
The WSO was definetly anything but a WSO there were others that couldn't provide Washington state ID as well..
